2) OUR ORIGINAL G1 COWS

In late 1999, a neighbouring dairy farmer put a small number of straws of Dexter semen into some of her Jersey cows for us. Semen was used from Silky Oaks Renegade (a short-legged red bull whose Sire is Cornahir Outlaw and Dam is Meadowpark Fantasy) and Meadowpark Fortuna (a long-legged black bull whose Sire is Shootlands Ben Macdhui and Dam is Meadowpark Pollie Jnr). In July 2000, we picked up four heifer calves and one bull calf as a result of this exercise. They were hand-raised on whole milk. One of the heifers (Shirley) turned out to be a mistake, a pure Jersey (she grew into a lovely cow). The boy, Moonlight Dancer, we raised to 22 months of age before turning him into freezer beef. The remaining three G1 cows, described below, have been with us since and are magnificent smallfarm cows with whom we have a close relationship.

Crofter Mains Special Girl (below, second from left) has one of the typical colourings of a Dexter/Jersey cross - black with ginger highlights. She is a short-legged cow, named after a song by Australian folk-country musician, John Williamson (and because she was our first-ever Dexter). Crofter Mains Shadow Rush (below, second from right) is a deep red, short-legged cow, named after a song by Scottish folk-rock group, Runrig. Crofter Mains Thunder Child (below, left) is a lighter red with white on her udder and a dark face. She is named after a song by Buffy Sainte-Marie.

All three of these cows have had black calves from Kenilworth Churchill and red calves (see photos of two of them below) from Brambledel Redberry Prince (AI).
