Where Can I Buy A Dexter?
1) Check out the website of the Dexter organisation in your country. It might provide a list of Dexters for Sale, or a list of breeders with Dexters for sale. If neither of these is provided, it might provide a list of members from which you could choose someone who lives nearby that you could contact and make enquiries. See the Part One of the Dexter Subject Directory for a list of Dexter organisation websites.
2) There are some specialist Dexter cattle marketing websites. The largest is www.dextercattleforsale.co.uk which is based in the United Kingdom and an Australian one can be found at www.dexter.com.au/stockforsale.html - see Part Six of the Dexter Subject Directory (under construction). When using such websites, be careful to check the location of any Dexters for sale to make sure it is feasible to transport them to your farm.
3) You can post a notice on a Dexter discussion board or group that you are looking to buy a Dexter and invite prospective sellers to contact you. For example, the USA-based "New Dexter Bulletin Board" has a "For Sale" section www.dakodan.net/dexters/forum/index.php. For other Dexter discussion boards, see Part Five of the Dexter Subject Directory.
4) Some countries have people who undertake the task of providing a central register of Dexters for sale, using the telephone and/or email. In New Zealand, "Dial-A-Dexter" is a voluntary service run by Karen Managh and used extensively by breeders throughout the country - email digbyhollow@ihug.co.nz.
Tips When Buying A Dexter
Some Dexter organisations provide a brochure or a section in their Handbook on issues to consider when buying a Dexter. Articles on the topic may appear from time to time in Dexter organisation Bulletins. For example, the UK Dexter Cattle Society brochure "A Guide to Buying Dexter Cattle", and the Dexter Cattle Australia brochure "A Guide to Buying a Dexter", both go through seven things to consider:
1) Advice to visit Dexter breeders to view their cattle and discuss the breed;
2) Information on what a Dexter needs in terms of pasture and supplementary feed, mating options, and vet support;
3) The need for a prospective buyer to consider what kind of Dexter he or she wants or will suit their property and lifestyle;
4) The kind of details you need to collect about any individual Dexter you are considering (age, calving history, temperament, halter and leading training, and health);
5) Important formal information that you need to view about a Dexter, such as its earmark and pedigree certificate;
6) Details of relevant Cattle Regulations (which vary considerably from country to country); and
7) An invitation to join a local Dexter support group, the contact details of which will be available from your national Dexter organisation.
