Back to Dexter Subject Directory Contents 1) Dexter Cattle Organisations: Part One EUROPEAN DEXTER ORGANISATION WEBSITES (written December 2004)
Dexter Cattle Society UK (DCSUK) (www.dextercattlesociety.co.uk) is a comprehensive website which underwent a major redevelopment at the beginning of 2002 and receives regular up-dates and additions from its webmaster, Mark Bowles. It is one of the two or three largest organisation websites, currently consisting of 12 main sections: * Breed Info - a very useful page on Dexter breed information and characteristics, including brief sections on history of the breed, carcase quality, and milk yield. * Society News * Diary Dates - for DCSUK Groups - contains nothing at present. * Show Dates * Show Results - includes some excellent photos of Dexters * Field Advisers * Cattle For Sale - a list of breeders with stock regularly for sale and with bulls for hire (this latter page also contains a list of the bulls in the Society's Elite Bull Scheme, including some German bulls). * Group News - contains pages for different Groups of the Society, for the Northern, Midland, Leicestershire, Cornwall and Devon Groups (some of these pages include newsletters and reports on AGMs, field visits and individual herds). There is also a link in the "Group News" page to a separate website set up by the South East Group (www.dextercattle-southeast.co.uk) - this website is interesting and well laid-out with History, Events, Committee and Membership sections supplemented with some excellent photos of Dexters. * Membership - among other things, contains a list of contact addresses for other Dexter Cattle organisations. * Merchandise * Bulls on hire - a list of breeders with bulls for hire, also a list of the bulls in the Society's Elite Bull Scheme, including some German bulls. * Other Links - also contains a link to a website set up by the West Wales Group (www.westwalesdexters.org.uk). [Note: DCSUK was formed in 1924, though an English Kerry and Dexter Cattle Society was organised in 1892.]
Dansk Dexter Forening (Danish Dexter Society) (www.dexter-dk.dk) is a Danish-language website with four main sections, including the details of the Society's officers and an AI bull catalogue. A Danish beef website has a link (www.cattle.dk/beef) which leads you to a web page that contains a table of registered beef cattle herds in Denmark in 1998: click on “Dexter” in the “Breeds” listing down the left-hand margin. This takes you to a very brief page, in English, with contact details for this Society. [Note: The Danish Dexter Society was formed in 1987.]
Bundesrasseverband Deutscher Dexter -Züchter und -Halter (BDDZ) (German Dexter Breeders Association) (www.dexter-bddz.de) is a German-language website currently (March 2005) still under construction. It aims to be a comprehensive website, with sections about the Association, the Dexter breed, and Dexters in Germany. The website uses frames in its construction so all the different pages are under the same URL. This means that hyperlinks cannot be made directly to pages at different levels in the site - you can't bookmark a particular page and may have to follow through a number of linked pages to find it again. There are 8 main sections: * Der Verein (The Association) - contains links to 5 pages, only two of which have been constructed at this stage, one, "Vorstand", on the Board of Directors and the other, "Impressum", including information on the website and copyright. It is worth following the link on the "Vorstand" page listed under the details for Dr Norbert Sijben, the first co-President, to a website entitled "The Dexter Cattle of Friedestrom" - www.sijben.de/dexter - which has information in German and English on the Dexter breed, 18 photos of German Dexters (attached to the link "Bilder: Die eigenen Herde") and a long article (in German) on the bulldog calf problem - "Das Problem der Bulldogkälber". * Das [Dexter] Rind (Dexter Cattle) - contains links to 7 further pages, including "Herkunft" ("Origin" - an article by co-President Gregor Fedorov on the history of Dexters); "Geschichte" ("History" - an article by co-President Gregor Fedorov on the history of Dexters in Germany); "Dexter heute" ("The Dexter Today" - under construction); "Praktische Nutzen" ("Practical Use" - also under construction), "Rassebeschreibung" ("Breed Description"), "Bulldogproblem" ("Bulldog Calf Problem" - includes an article by Dr Norbert Sijben written in February 2000 presenting the argument that the chondrodysplasia gene should be bred out of Dexters and instead a uniform breed of small cattle be bred), and "Fotos" (3 photos of Dexters from Dr Sijben's collection referred to above). * Haltung (Management) - a long article on a variety of issues about raising Dexters. * Herdbuch (Herdbook) - under construction. * Angebote (Ads for Dexters for sale). * Rinderüberwachung (Cattle Management) - refers to regulations about cattle in Germany - under construction. * Dexter weltweit (Dexters Worldwide) - links (one provided at this stage). * Literatur (Literature) - a list of 10 publications (some German, some English-language) relating to cattle and Dexters. The website's article on the history of Dexters in Germany notes that the BDDZ has about 50 members with approximately 400 Dexters. The majority of members is resident in lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Mention is also made in this article that in the early 1990s, German Dexter breeders met to consider how to organise in Germany and two different options were followed - the BDDZ which maintained close links with the DCS in the UK (including registering Dexters in the DCS herdbook), and the DVD (see next entry) which formed an independent German organisation.
Dexter Verband Deutschland (German Dexter Federation) (www.dexter-cattle.de) is a German-language website which is comprehensive in scope. It includes a lot of information on Dexters and raising Dexters in Germany, a "Fotogalerie" with some interesting photos, and a "Markt" link which takes you to a list of animals for sale. The "Informationen" section has a number of pages on such topics as "Herkuft" (on the origin and history of Dexters) and "Mutterkuhhaltung" (a large page on natural rearing, rotating Dexters with horses, fencing, and area requirements).
Holland Dexter (www.hollanddexter.nl) is currently in the process of being developed by a Dutch group. It is entirely in Dutch and appears to be reasonably comprehensive in aim although not as large as the UK or German sites. Not all sections are yet complete. At present (early 2005), it has some interesting photos on it and a brief section on the history of the breed (in Dutch). It also includes sections on News and Activities.
Dexter Club Schweiz
(www.dexterclub.ch) is the website of
a relatively recent Dexter Association in Switzerland. The Association was formed in
early 2003, and in early 2005 had about 50 members with about 220 animals in
its Herdbook. The website is a reasonably small one, in the German language, with a
number of pages but most of them having little text. Among the topics covered are: the
origin of the Association, the officers and their contact details,
characteristics of the breed (emphasising dual-purpose, longevity, easy
calving, good mothering, high milk production for its size, and ability to
remain outside on pasture all year round), stock for sale, and an account of the
Association's first annual meeting in October 2003 (click on "Veranstaltungen"
then "18.10.2003", with links there to associated photos such as
www.dexterclub.ch/images/tiere.JPG,
www.dexterclub.ch/images/dexter.JPG and
www.dexterclub.ch/images/org.JPG). The Links page includes a link to the
Swiss organisation that appears to run a combined Herd Book for a number of
minority breeds. This site also has a page on the Dexter breed (which can be
brought up in German or in French) - go to
www.svamh.ch/flhb/default.htm
and click on "Fleischrinderrassen" then "Dexter".
