2) Dexter Breeders and Farms with Dexters: Part Three
MEDIUM-SIZED WEBSITES (written January 2005)
1. Bill and Lorelie Larsson's Green Glade Dexters www.users.bigpond.com/wllarsson, South Australia, has eight pages, three of them with information on the Dexter breed (a couple of typos here mar an otherwise very good presentation), others on their own herd of polled Dexters, including photos of the stock. Only one link is included on the "Links" page, to Dexter Cattle Australia.
2. Beverley McCulloch and Michael Trotter's Summer Wine Dun Dexters www.dundexters.co.nz, Canterbury, New Zealand, is a multi-page website that is constructed with very effective graphics and photos. It tells imaginatively the story not only of the Summer Wine stud and herd but also of dun Dexters in general. The website builders have done historical research on the Dexter breed and this is reflected in the depth of information provided. Despite this depth, the text is always interesting and often entertaining! Photos are carefully chosen, framed and positioned. The stories behind the names of some of their herd are provided, as is a poem for their bull, Paul. Every element of the site has been chosen deliberately and the result is very professional and effective.
3. Jimmie and Steven Bauer's Moon Over the Mojave Ranch www.moonoverthemojaveranch.com, California, USA, has an unusual design, although it is still under construction. The home page, which can take some time to download depending on your connection speed, has six images arranged horizontally across the middle. If you place your cursor over one of these, a larger image appears in the top half of the home page, giving an indication of the contents of a page. If you then click on the initial smaller image, you will be taken to that page. The first page, "Our Herd", also takes a little time to download (but then you can go through its contents quickly) - it contains a slide show which can be operated manually or automatically. I found that the automatic slide show operated continuously on a loop, and to stop it I had to use my browser's "Back" button to move back to the home page. The second page is "Dexter FAQs" (Frequently Asked Questions) - "All good choices in life should be well informed choices". This page contains a long paragraph on the History of the breed and other entries on topics such as temperament, size and diet (though there are a few unfortunate spelling errors on this page and elsewhere). The "About Us" and "Contact Us" pages are still under construction, while the "For Sale" page currently has the photos of four Dexters, three of which are labelled as sold.
4. Ken and Jody Gabbert's Adanal Ranch www.adanalranch.com, Texas, USA, is another substantial medium website for a "259 wooded acres" working guest ranch. Farm animals include Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys, Dexter Cattle, Dwarf Nubian Dairy Goats, and Texas Longhorns. The are pages on and photos of each type of animal, and sections on the range of services and activities offered to paying guests. There is music associated with this site as well. When I visited the site in January 2005, only one page came up, announcing "ADANAL RANCH is temporarily closed. Please check with us next year." No doubt taking a well-earned rest over winter.
5. Christine and Pat's (no surname provided) Kirise Dexters and Rare Breed Pigs www.kirisedexters.co.uk, Yorkshire, England, is another large-medium website, this one aimed at selling quality beef, lamb and rare-breed pork, informing potential customers about the use of traditional rearing methods in a stress free environment - "happy animals - wonderful meat!". A lot happens on these 14 rented acres! Useful information on Dexter beef is supplemented with great photos of Dexter cattle. A personal account of the Dexters and the development of the herd appears in "About Us". The site is still under development, with a section on Kirise Border Terriers promised.
