5) Dexter Discussion Boards

 

1. Dexter Cattle For Sale Discussion Board www.dextercattleforsale.co.uk (click on "Discussion Board" in left-hand margin) - UK-based board that has been running for a few years. Administered by Mark Bowles, a new format was adopted in March 2004. Had 138 members in February 2005 and is a very popular, active and useful forum.

 

2. The New Dexter Bulletin Board www.dakodan.net/dexters/forum - US-based board started in February 2004, administered by Korey Rust assisted by a number of moderators. It had 261 registered users in January 2005 and is another very popular, active and useful forum.

 

3. Yahoo Groups - These Groups can be set up in different ways. Most have open membership (you simply need to apply for membership and this is automatically granted straightaway) and non-members can even read the postings or messages that have been made. Some require you to apply for membership and await approval from the Group administrator. Others have a restricted membership requiring certain criteria, and their message archive may not be publicly available.  

 

a) "DexterCattle - Discussion list for Dexter Cattle" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dextercattle - started January 2000 - In February 2005 had 45 members but very light usage (12 was the most messages recorded in a year, in 2003). "The purpose of this list is to meet, chat with and talk to people who have an interest in Dexter Cattle."

 

b) "Dexter Cattle Northwest" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dextercattleNW - started October 2003 - January 2005 had 51 members with light to medium usage. Started by "a Northwest US based group hoping to serve as a point of communication for all".

 

c) "Dexter Cattle 2 - A place to discuss Dexter Cattle" [dextercattle2]  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dextercattle2 - started Jan 2000 - February 2005 had 421 members and was very active. "This club was created for the breeders and those interested in Dexter cattle to have a common place to come together. To discuss Dexters, to purchase or sell, get advice or offer advice, make announcements, organize events, etc." This Group has open membership and its message archive is viewable by the public.

 

d) "Dexter Cattle Only" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dextercattleonly - started February 2004 - Feb 2005 had 166 members and was very active. "This group is for discussing Dexter cattle. Come here to talk about keeping one cow or many on small farms or homesteads." This Group requires prospective members to apply, although its message archive is open to the public.

 

e) "Purebred Dexter Breeders" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/purebreddexterbreeders - started July 2004 - Feb 2005 had 49 members and has medium usage. "Membership is restricted to Paid Members of Purebred Dexter Cattle Association of North America." This Group also requires prospective members to apply, although its message archive is open to the public.

 

f) "Red Cinder Cattle Club - A Place to discuss Dexter cattle" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/redcindercattleclub - started April 2000 - Feb 2005 had 12 members but extremely light usage. "Red Cinder Cattle Co. Striving to breed quality Dexter cattle and working to eliminate gene defects."

 

g) "Dexter Cattle ADCA - American Dexter Cattle Association" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DexterCattleADCA - started September 2004 - Feb 2005 had 89 members and has medium usage. "This Group is for EVERYONE who would like to discuss the Dexter Cattle Breed. Without Politics. If you are a member of the PDCA or ADCA or thinking about it you can join this list no problem!" This Group has an open membership but its message archive is viewable by members only.

 

h) "Dexter Cattle PDCA - Purebred Dexter Cattle Association" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DexterCattlePDCA - started September 2004 - Feb 2005 had 56 members and has light usage. "This Group is for EVERYONE who would like to discuss the Dexter Cattle Breed. Without Politics. If you are a member of the PDCA or ADCA or thinking about it you can join this list no problem!" This Group also has an open membership but its message archive is viewable by members only.

 

i) "Dexter Cattle And Goat Talk" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dexter_cattle_and_goat_talk - started December 2004 - Feb 2005 had 14 members. Started by a New Zealand Dexter breeder.

 

j) "Homestead Cow" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HomesteadCow is a Yahoo Group also likely to be of interest to many Dexter breeders. It was started in September 2002, had a membership of 137 in February 2005, and experiences medium to heavy usage. "Dairy and beef, the homestead cow provides good food for the family and to sell. And, oxen can supply draft power needs on the homestead or small farm. We discuss home dairying, cooking with milk, making milk products (cheese, yogurt, kefir, butter, ice cream, soap, etc.), and raising cattle for beef or oxen on a small farm scale.Come here to discuss keeping one cow or a few cows on small farms or homesteads. Discussion of animal husbandry, health, feeding, and training issues or problems is welcome. Sales related to cattle, dairy, beef, and oxen, are allowed on Fridays." Membership requires approval and the message archive viewable by members only.
 

4. An INACTIVE Bulletin Board is the Australian-based Dexter Cattle Breeders Bulletin Board, which had very active use, and was still advertised for a while at www.dextercattlebreeders.com - in November 2005, I noticed that this website and domain name was no longer being used.
