Volvo Lodge Dun Wunda (born 1994), is a dun-coloured non-short Dexter cow (Dam, Maplecrest Florrie; Sire, Bradner Hilltop Dunstan). She started as an embryo in Canada which was then exported to Australia where she was born. She has Woodmagic in her pedigree, four and five generations back. She was brought into NZ in 1999 by as one of the first two modern live imported Dexters into the country, pregnant at the time with Charming St Paul (who has become the leading dun AI bull in NZ). We purchased Dun Wunda in September 2000. She has since had three heifer calves to our foundation bull, Kenilworth Churchill. Dun Wunda's first calf, Crofter Mains Tarabuco (above, right) is a short black cow (born 2002) whose own first calf was tragically still-born in December 2004. Crofter Mains Oruro (above, middle), another small black heifer, the second offspring of Volvo Lodge Dun Wunda and Kenilworth Churchill, was born in 2003. In 2004, Oruro was sold to Virginia Poland who has the Kau-iti Herd and now lives on the next-door property to us. Crofter Mains Caliente (right) was born to Dun Wunda on New Years Day, 2005, another beautiful small black heifer.

Churchill in the top paddock, with Shadow Rush, January 2002.Kenilworth Churchill (left and right, born 1999) was a black bull, eventually de-horned, and was short-legged (he tested as a carrier of the Dexter chondrodysplasia gene). His Dam was Kenilworth Lara Wai; his Sire, Kenilworth O’Reilly. Churchill was bred by Tyna Charles, Canterbury, from full blood lines through imported embryos. Both of Churchill’sHeather, Churchill and wwoofers Bob and Sarah, June 2001. Grandsires were Danish bulls. Churchill served three full and productive years at Waikoha Smallfarm, including some time leased to local and Lower North Island Dexter breeders. He developed arthritis which made life a bit difficult on our steeper slopes, so we reluctantly had to cull him in November 2004.

Beaumont Ronan O'Gara, our new herd bull, December 2004.

Beltaine Ronan O'Gara (right) has become our second herd bull, a fine non-short young bull (from United States and Canadian blood lines) from the Beaumont Stud of Jules Smith and Pita Gregory just north of Auckland. Heather shares ownership of Ronan with our neighbouring Dexter breeder, Virginia Poland. Although still quite young he already shows real promise. We eagerly anticipate his offspring in early spring 2005.
