Dexters as

Show Animals

Many Dexter breeders show their animals. They take them along to agricultural shows, State fairs, rare breed shows, or even specialist National Dexter Breed shows. There they parade their Dexters in the show-ring before the eye of a Judge. The Judge compares these Dexters with a set of ideal breed guidelines about a diversity of characteristics such as body and limb soundness, height, colour, etc.

The show season can be a very busy one, with events sometimes held every weekend for the enthusiastic exhibitor. Showing can become a style of life for a number of months of the year.

At the show, Dexter breeders present publicly the animals that they have bred and lay on the line the quality of their achievements. Championships, prizes, cups and ribbons are the reward for being able to breed cattle that are judged to fit the breed guidelines which represent the ideal. The reputation of a Dexter Stud and the demand for its animals are enhanced by success in the show-ring.

Participation at shows provides the Dexter breeder with other things as well. Social contact with fellow breeders occurs there. People with the same passion can share friendship, wisdom and practical advice. Promotion of the Dexter breed is also an important aspect of showing - the Public and other cattle breeders are made aware of the existence and qualities of Dexters.

Children learn to raise a calf, look after it, groom it, and train it to lead. This develops an understanding and respect for animals, and may begin a life-long relationship with the Dexter breed.
