KAU-ITI DEXTER CATTLE STUD

Virginia Poland
Hamilton, New Zealand

"Kau-iti" is NZ Māori for "Little cow"

The perfect description for the Dexter, the perfect smallblock cow

Virginia with Kau-iti Echo, G3 yearling heifer.     Siobhan Poland with Kau-iti Itty Bitty (right) at Te Pahu school calf day, 2002.     Two years later, Kau-iti Itty Bitty, G3 cow.

Breeding Aims

Kau-iti Stud is aiming to breed a Dexter that has all of the following qualities:

Beaumont Ronan O'Gara, full blood bull, 2 years old.

Itty Bitty and Echo under the large shady trees at Kau-iti Farm. * Small in stature
 * Easily handled

 * Dual purpose

 * Raises 2 calves at a time

 * Excellent Dexter beef

Breeding Aims

Like nearly all NZ Dexter studs, Kau-iti Stud began with a grading-up programme, starting from scratch with G1s. I then bought in some G2 and G3 cows, followed by the purchase of a full blood heifer and later a full blood bull. My initial narrow breeding base has thus become significantly wider.

Crofter Mains Oruro, full blood yearling heifer.
