Statement by the Secretary of the UK Dexter Cattle Society about Matters Raised in Andrew Sheppy's Paper on "Bloodlines, Breed Structure, and the Influence of AI..."
In 2001, the Council of the New Zealand Dexter Cattle Society received an inquiry from a member about the comments in Andrew Sheppy's paper that cast "doubts about the authenticity of certain bloodlines". A member of the Society's Council conducted an investigation into the matter in the course of which he received the following communication from the Secretary of the UK Dexter Cattle Society:
I have now had the opportunity to discuss your letter . . . with Council members . . . As I expected, they felt that the views expressed by Mr Sheppy in his paper to the World Congress were his personal opinion and in no way were endorsed by The Dexter Society. This does not mean that no herd records have or are likely to be amended and there has, so far, been no further discussion on the subject. I hope this clarifies the situation although I suspect that this may be not the answer you were expecting.
The Council of the New Zealand DCS reported this to its members in the "Dexter Dispatch", No. 34, November 2001, pages 29-30, and stated:
DCSNZ has no say in registering animals whose bloodlines have been registered in an overseas Dexter Herd Book. Other societies are responsible for the accuracy of their Herd Books and our society has no right to refuse any animals whose pedigrees originate in another herd book.
